Impulsion is the controlled, energetic power that comes from your horse’s hindquarters and flows through their entire body. It’s what transforms steady rhythm and soft connection into a forward, dynamic, and expressive ride. True impulsion gives your horse that “electric” feeling—where every stride feels purposeful, powerful, and light, without ever rushing.
The Characteristics
- Active and engaged hind legs pushing the horse forward
- Elastic movement through the back and topline
- Balanced, uphill energy that stays within the rhythm
- Willingness to go forward with lightness and ease
- Smooth, responsive transitions
Common Mistakes
- Confusing speed with impulsion (going faster isn’t the same as having power)
- Losing relaxation by driving too hard
- Blocking forward energy with stiff hands or seat
- Allowing the horse to flatten instead of lifting through the back
Before asking for impulsion, make sure your horse has the basics of rhythm, suppleness, and connection solid.
Exercises to Improve
- Transitions within and between gaits – Keep them frequent to engage the hind end and build responsiveness.
- Cavaletti work – Poles encourage lift and active steps while improving focus.
- Lengthen and shorten – Ask for small bursts of energy and then bring it back to work on control and power.
- Circle work with spirals – Encourage your horse to step under and push from behind as you adjust the size of your circle.
The Rider's Role
Your job is to invite and manage the energy. Use your legs to create forward, your seat to guide the flow, and your hands to softly receive and recycle that power. Stay balanced and elastic, allowing your horse’s back to swing freely while keeping the connection steady. Remember, impulsion thrives in harmony—not force.
Why It Matters
Impulsion is what gives dressage its sparkle. Without it, movements stay flat, heavy, or lifeless. With it, you unlock expression, athleticism, and lightness. It’s the bridge between a well-balanced foundation and the brilliance needed for advanced work. Whether you're in the arena or out on the trail, impulsion is the difference between just going through the motions and truly feeling your horse come alive beneath you.
To harness all that power, you’ll need to keep it straight. Check out Step 5: Straightness. This article is part of our complete Dressage Training Scale series. Start from the beginning here.
