The Dressage Training Scale Step 6: Collection – Elevating the Ride

Collection is the final step of the Dressage Training Scale, where all the previous elements come together. In collection, your horse carries more weight on the hindquarters, lightens the forehand, and moves with increased balance, power, and agility. It’s not about slowing down—it’s about shifting the energy back, creating uphill movement, and developing ultimate self-carriage.

The Characteristics

  • Increased engagement of the hind legs
  • Shorter, higher, and more elevated strides
  • Lightness in the forehand
  • Consistent rhythm and connection despite the added difficulty
  • Suppleness and freedom through the body

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking collection means pulling back or restricting the horse
  • Losing impulsion and rhythm by asking for too much too soon
  • Allowing the horse to get tight or braced instead of staying elastic
  • Forgetting to ride forward into collection, not backwards into it

Collection only becomes possible once straightness is dialed in and the energy from impulsion is ready to lift.

Exercises to Improve

  • Half-halts – Refine the communication between your leg and hand, rebalancing the horse and preparing them to sit.
  • Collected to medium transitions – Asking the horse to push out, then collect back, develops strength and control.
  • Shoulder-in to half-pass – These movements demand collection and help build it over time.
  • Working pirouettes or small circles – Encourage engagement and balance by keeping the steps controlled and active.

The Rider's Role

You are the pilot of the power. Stay centered and supple, using your seat to invite the horse’s back to lift and their hind legs to engage. Your hands must remain soft and elastic, receiving the energy without blocking it. Collection is a conversation—a constant, subtle dialogue between you and your horse to maintain the balance and lightness without tension.

Why It Matters

Collection is where true harmony lives. It’s the key to advanced dressage movements, but more than that, it’s the ultimate expression of partnership. With collection, your horse becomes stronger, more balanced, and more confident. The ride becomes lighter, more responsive, and deeply connected. It’s not just the final step of the training scale—it’s the place where the work transforms into art.
